Try running it in an xterm instead of gnome-terminal.

And what fails exactly? Can't you learn in any key, or just not function keys?

Patch added.

1. Recognize BackSpace key.
   
2. Buttons work. On button "Ok" learned keys are accepted. On "Cancel" - will forget what was learned.
   
3. Mouse supported. Buttons can be pressed by mouse. With mouse there are some flaws - sometime no response on mouse action. On some terminals mouses will not work.
